Tongan Week of Prayer for the New Year (Uike Lotu) January 5th through 9th

In Tonga and among Tongan communities worldwide, the Uike Lotu — meaning Week of Prayer — is a cherished tradition that marks the start of the New Year.

  • When it happens: Usually during the first week of January.
  • What it involves: Congregations gather each evening at 6 pm— for worship, prayer, and singing. After service, families and friends share meals, often bringing food to the church to enjoy together.
  • Purpose: It’s a time for spiritual renewal, thanksgiving for the past year, and seeking blessings for the year ahead.
  • Atmosphere: Joyful yet reverent, blending deep faith with strong community bonds. Many see it as a way to set the tone for the rest of the year — grounded in prayer, unity, and generosity.

It’s not just a religious observance, but also a cultural celebration that reinforces Tongan values of faith, family, and fellowship.

ALL of God’s children are welcome.
